work for two men. I propose that Dr. Hartley should continue

in his present post as Railway Medical Officer until the

term of his Agreement expires on October 5th next when

he will be appointed to the vacancy created by Dr. Macfar-

-lane's appointment as Bacteriologist. From that date till

about the end of the following June when Railway Construct-

-ion (with exception of Messrs. Leigh and Orange's

Contract and the Buildings at the Terminal Station) will

have practically ceased it will probably be necessary to

engage the services of a local Practitioner to assist Dr.

Hartley, but the extent to which it will be necessary to

do so cannot be precisely foretold until it is seen what

number of men are remaining on the works at that date.

I propose that the appointment

shall be on the usual terms of £480 by £40 triennially to

£720, but with a Conveyance Allowance of $480. Dr. Hartley

has informed me that he is willing to accept the appoint-

-ment on these terms.
